It is widely accepted that a person’s health is dependent upon the wellbeing of both the mind as well as the body. So when identifying the best spas in London, I focused on selecting the spas that take a holistic approach to wellbeing whilst providing the most effective and innovative treatments. I attribute my longevity as a successful international model to the constructive benefits of visiting a good spa. Choosing the right spa really does improve your health, appearance as well as the mind. Having tried numerous spas in London, my top three spas are the following:
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental
The Mandarin Oriental has undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment and re-opened in 2018. The renowned New York designer Adam D. Tihany has redesigned the spa, making it one, if not the most luxurious spa in London. The new design perfectly symbolises the brand’s oriental heritage by drawing heavily on Chinese influences throughout including the available treatments. Professor Ke, the founder of ASANTE Traditional Chinese Medicine, designs bespoke treatments depending on the client’s needs.
This individual attention begins as soon as you enter the premises. You are encouraged to arrive at least 45 minutes early so that you can enjoy the complementary facilities such as the vitality pool, Amethyst Cystal Steam room and samarium. The focus is on getting you completely relaxed and carefree so that the mind is free from stress and the body more receptive to the amazing treatments. The only headache around is which treatment to choose as you are spoilt for choice.
For body rejuvenation, there is the Tuina massage which uses pressure, stretching, meditation and breathing techniques. If you are not in a hurry, choose the Tian Quan treatment in the new stunning Oriental Suite with its traditionally mosaic-tiled Rasul water temple designed to fully cleanse your body, followed by a hydrating facial and full body massage.
There is a plethora of beauty treatments with the Bastien Gonzalez Pedi:Mani:Cure Studios, Linda Meredith results-focused facials and the Philip Kingsley hair and scalp treatments. Only premium products are used from Aromatherapy Associates, Sodashi and Nescens. Its collaboration with the innovative Swiss skincare brand Nescens has created a range of industry leading facials. Whichever Nescens facial treatment you choose, your skin will look plump, hydrated and firm resulting in a fresh glow. So now you know my secret to have been able to keep modelling at the highest level for over a decade.
Akasha Holistic Wellbeing, Hotel Café Royal
Akasha Holistic Wellbeing is rated number 1 out of 772 spas and wellness centres in London with 96% rating it Excellent (90%) or Very Good on Tripadvisor. What is most telling is that there are almost no negative reviews at all. Located in the heart of London adjoining Hotel Café Royal on Regent Street, the Akasha spa is an exceptional holistic wellness spa.
The holistic approach is exemplified by its world class yoga classes. They have 6 spaces available per class so booking early is highly advised. By limiting the number, the instructors are able to focus on each individual and their particular needs. This attention on the individual permeates through to all aspects and services of the spa. Apart from its extensive beauty, anti-ageing and facials signature treatments, Akasha has a private Hammam for purifying massages and scrubs and a Vichy shower for hydrotherapy rituals. A first for London is its dedicated Watsu pool offering a range of further specialist hydrotherapy treatments. The healing power of hydrotherapy is well-known. For instance, thoroughbred race horses undergo hydrotherapy treatments after injury and greatly assist in the healing process. If you want something simpler, you can always enjoy your own hydrotherapy treatment in the sizeable indoor pool complete with relaxing areas after your swim.
Another first in the UK is its holistic energy healing Bone Setting treatment by Tai Chi masters Andy and Duran Mack. There are only a handful of individuals in the world who have mastered this highly skilled and complex restorative therapy. It takes years of practice to master the technique of manipulating a body’s energy fields to relieve stress, anxiety and tension. The focus of this treatment is to create harmony throughout the body as well as the mind.
Although the facilities are first class and having world leading holistic treatments, it is Akasha’s service that elevates it to be ranked number 1 spa in London. Throughout the stay, the staff go out of their way to ensure your wellbeing and enjoyment of the spa’s facilities. It is definitely one of my favourite spas in London.
ESPA Life at Corinthia
The ESPA Life spa at the Corinthia Hotel is the largest urban spa in London. Spanning four floors over 3,300 sqm with 17 treatment rooms, there is something for everyone like the Daniel Galvin hair salon, Margaret Dabbs nail studio, and the BodySPace fitness studio. It is also perfect for those who just want to relax as there is a large indoor swimming pool, ice fountain, sauna, heated loungers and private sleep pods.
This spa is ESPA’s next generation spa which provides an integrated holistic wellness approach with a luxury experience. The opulent interiors by GA Design features curved lacquered walls that creates a wave-like effect to symbolise the flow of energy and a Chanel-inspired colour palette of black and champagne delivering a perfect yin yang balance. The luxury holistic theme transcends from the interiors to the vast treatment menu. There is a team of acupuncturists, osteopaths, naturopaths, Chinese medicine experts, highly trained masseuses and personal trainers. There is almost every conceivable treatment that you can think of.
Wellness therapies include acupuncture, physiotherapy, reflexology and craniosacral therapy. There are several massages available including hot stone and deep tissue for alleviating muscular tightness, Swedish and Balinese for invigorating and relaxing the mind and body as well as Inner Calm Massage that provides a personalised holistic experience which quietens the mind, releases tension and nourishes the skin.
Then there are the beauty treatments developed by the world-recognised Dr Barbara Sturm. She is renowned for her non-surgical anti-aging treatments and methods for rejuvenating the skin to reduce fine lines and deliver healthy, glowing skin. The cutting-edge molecular science behind the treatments utilises the patient’s own blood cells to produce proteins that reduce inflammation and stimulate the healing process.
With so much on offer like the thermal suite with its nine-metre steel-lined pool, a large vitality pool with air and water massage jets, a 360-degree view sauna, a mosaic steam room, experience shower, an ice fountain, and relaxation areas with heated loungers, I would need a lot more space to list everything. However, hopefully I have given you a hint of the luxury experience awaiting you when you enter the ESPA Spa. The facilities are amongst the best in London (and even in the world). Combine that with professional yet very friendly staff who will tailor your experience to your needs, I have no hesitation to say that my experience rates amongst the best I ever have had. Just make sure that you allow plenty of time to enjoy all that this spa has to offer.
